I teach my students that this is the sign for HIMSELF/HERSELF/ITSELF. If you sweep the hand toward the side (OFF the sightline), it becomes the sign for THEMSELVES (the plural 3rd-person reflexive form). Also, I tend to use the "10-hand" rather than the "A-hand."
