I just checked the sign for flour and this is the same sign as flour.

Julie,  Yes.  You need to remember that sign language is very contextual so there are going to be times where there is one sign that can mean several different things but in the correct context, it can only mean that one word. For example if you were making cookies and you ran out of flour, so you are sending your son to the store to get more flour for the cookies you are making, he would know that you weren’t sending him to pick up dirt, sand or soil.  Plus you also need to remember that fingerspelling something for clarification that is always an option.  In ASL, many times that is the first option.  It is just that SEE sign has taken many of those signs and created a Signed English variation.  Many signers with use some SEE sign in with their everyday communication as well or are at least aware of these signs even if they choose not to use them.   Thanks, John
