Welcome to Introduction to Fingerspelling and the alphabet in American Sign Language. This set of lessons is about ASL fingerspelling. fingerspelling is used to spell proper nouns. For example, names of people, places, and things. And for words that have no signs, there are two parts to fingerspelling. First is fingerspelling yourself, which is called expressive fingerspelling. Second is understanding someone else fingerspelling, which is called receptive fingerspelling. During these lessons, we will practice both receptive and expressive fingerspelling.
