In this lesson, we will discuss, what is fingerspelling. An important first question is, What is finger spelling? Fingerspelling Is an important part of American Sign Language where individual letters of the ASL manual alphabet are fingerspelled to spell out words. The letters of the alphabet used in ASL fingerspelling are called “the manual alphabet.” Each letter in the ASL manual alphabet corresponds to a letter of the English alphabet. Therefore, there are 26 letters in the ASL manual alphabet. It does not matter if a letter is uppercase or lowercase in written English, the same ASL letter is fingerspelled. By the end of this course, you will learn to fingerspell all 26 letters, how to combine letters together to fingerspell words, and how to use fingerspelling to communicate with others, both receptively and expressively through fingerspelling.
