I'm new to signing so probably shouldn't be attempting to make clarifications but this sign refers to babies as in "infants" and "newborns". The other way you're referring to, I believe, is the sign for the slang term "baby"; for couples; as a term of endearment. Just sayin'.

The sign shown here is for baby as in an infant. The other sign that Eric was referring to above would be the sign shown on this site as Sweetheart.

I saw someone sign baby differently. Instead of doing that she put both her fists together like she was almost going to sign game but she kept them together with her thumbs pointing up and she bent them both up and down a few times
