American Sign Language for Babies and Children

Course Overview

This course is designed for adults—parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone supporting early childhood communication—who want to learn American Sign Language (ASL) to use with babies and young children.

Whether you are starting with a newborn or introducing ASL to a toddler, preschooler, or older child new to signing, this course will give you the tools and confidence to incorporate ASL into daily routines. ASL is a rich, natural language used by the Deaf community, and early exposure to it fosters strong language development, deeper communication, and respect for Deaf culture.

You’ll learn high-frequency, developmentally appropriate vocabulary and short phrases to help children express their wants and needs. Lessons are organized around familiar parts of a child’s day, including:

  • Family Time
  • Meal Time
  • Potty Time
  • Play Time
  • Bath Time
  • Bedtime
  • Polite Time

The course emphasizes natural, everyday use—integrating ASL into the moments you are already sharing with children. By the end of the course, you will be well equipped to support early communication, foster meaningful connections, and build a strong language foundation through ASL.
