I just returned from an ASL course at Gallaudet. We had a Deaf African man from Uganda learning American SL. Although the sign appears mostly correct, both the instructor (a Deaf Linguistics teacher) and the man from Uganda signed Africa with a more pronounced downward slope. The professor described it as the shape of Africa from the curve down to South Africa.

If the first sign is the lesser used and more politically incorrect, why is it the first sign shown?

Please note that we choose to list the original ASL sign for the countries first, and then the newer, more politically correct (in some cases) signs 2nd. Also note that there are still going to be older native signers that may infact still use this sign. Thanks

My major in college is ASL interpreting and my teacher is deaf and this is the exact sign she showed my class when she was signing country's.
