Sometimes. Not in a normal sentence. Like the sentence they use as an example you would just sign "you wonderful," but sometimes sentences do require you use "are." Sometimes it's just used to have the sentence make more sense, sometimes it's used to exaggerate something, and sometimes it's used if are is at the end of the sentence. But you're right, they normally don't use it.

Like Maureen said, it's not used in a typical sentence, but it would be used if you wanted to emphasize something. For instance, I was trying to sign to someone the primary ideas behind a certain philosophy, so, after signing the concepts, I signed "these ideas ARE Confucianism".
