I see the alternate sign (on Signing Savvy) often, but it is initialized. I've seen (and like and use) this sign: the non-dominant hand is horizontal, representing the surface of the water. The dominant 'Y'-hand moves from the non-dominant side toward the dominant side, BUT it starts below the surface of the water, arcs above the water, the moves below the surface (near the wrist). The 'Y'-hand clearly represents the fluke of the whale.
