On "Signing Time" they seem to use basically this same sign for backpack indicating the straps. Thoughts?

Get creative, a lot of signing is in context, so the person should be able to figure out based on the sentence what you are referring to. If they can't, improvise, gesture to your back and the do the straps for back pack or use your "a" hand like it is a bar of soap on your face first. When signs are similar, think about the difference between wear and where. Although spelled differently, they sound the same, so how do we know what the meaning is? Context. Hope this helps.

Julie is correct!

There are many signs that are going to be so close that when signed in different context totally change the meaning.  This is one of those examples.
