I suppose  Deaf people migh say they 'lost their voice', but isn't this sign more usually meant to express that Deaf people in some situations choose to speak?  So,  a Deaf person might use this sign to convey something like: "I _voiced_ to the hearing clerk instead of writing notes".

yes...this could be used in that situation

I think the sentence used in this example was more written from the perspective of a hearing person telling a deaf person that they had "lost their voice" during a performance.
