Word List Author Note: Featured Deaf History Fact / This Day In History: March 13th is a significant day in Deaf history and is also the start of Deaf History Month. On March 13, 1988, the first Deaf president of Gallaudet University, a school for people who are Deaf and hard of hearing, was selected. The appointment of the first Deaf president ended the famous Deaf President Now (DPN) student protest and was considered a victory for both students and the Deaf community because in its 124 year history the institution had never selected a Deaf president until Dr. Irving King Jordan was named that year. Deaf History Month is celebrated March 13th to April 15th each year.
