Sign Word List: Continents
Word 1 of 7

Notice: This is the ASL sign for AFRICA. Some consider this sign to be controversial and not politically correct, while others prefer this sign. Those who have an issue with this sign feel the sign, which is signed at the nose, is making fun of Africans' noses. However, others feel the sign, which is similar to the sign for BEAUTIFUL, symbolizes "Africa is Beautiful.” Look at the variation of AFRICA with the sign type of “other” to see how AFRICA is signed in Africa.

How is this politically incorrect? With Japan and China, it's obvious. With this, not so much.

The physical feature is what is emphasized.

Because the physical feature of the wide nose is emphasized, this is then considered a politically incorrect sign.

I find it interesting that this sign is considered politically incorrect, but when teachers of the deaf from South Africa were in Romney at WVSD a few years ago (and we were told not to use this sign because of the "incorrectness" of the sign), they, themselves, used this sign of beauty to tell us they are from Africa, although the sign did not necessarily end on the nose.  They had no idea that folks were being told it is "politically incorrect" them, it meant Africa is Beautiful or Beautiful Africa.

Thanks for sharing this! We've had an internal discussion with some of our Advisory Board members and have updated the sign notice to better reflect the variety of opinions.
