I learned it the way above in MI 30 years ago. In Northern CA they are doing the "y" sign with a pointer finger at the ear then pulling down to a "y".

In California the pointing to the ear and pulling down in to a "Y" (without the wiggle) is ASL for "California" (with the wiggle, it's gold)
