Word List Author Note: Signing Savvy is correct: this is the sign for the English language, and Fant is correct, because this chapter is about school, therefore about the English language. Signing Savvy shows the 'modern' sign for "England" or "from England (English)" in ASL1. However, don't 'jiggle' the chin (as shown here). Just place your hand on the chin, or use a 'double motion' ("tap"), as shown in Costello's ASL Dictionary. You need to know that "Geographical References" (including countries) are in the last section of the dictionary, so you will not (not!) find "England" or "British" in the regular part of the dictionary. To see the modern sign "England," look up "United Kingdom" in Costello. BTW, the jiggly sign shown is just like the old-fashioned Mississippi sign for "truck," implying a rough ride that made your jaw jiggle. NOTE: If referring to the English (British) people (e.g., 'The English enjoy their afternoon tea.'), your ASL sentence must include the phrase "ENGLISH PEOPLE." If referring to the English language (e.g., "English is so weird compared to ASL!"), your ASL sentence should include the phrase "ENGLISH LANGUAGE."
